Let's Hear Something Sad

What is this site, anyway?

Hidden deep within the Spotify API, for every track on the platform, there is a value called "Valence". Here's what Spotify has to say about it:

"A measure from 0.0 to 1.0 describing the musical positiveness conveyed by a track. Tracks with high valence sound more positive (e.g. happy, cheerful, euphoric), while tracks with low valence sound more negative (e.g. sad, depressed, angry)."

The exact way in which valence functions is unknown - and it certainly can harbour unexpected values - but overall it gives a suprisingly fair reflection of most music's mood.

This software assesses the valence of any track you like, and helps you to quantify your result with a list of famous musicians arranged by their average valences. For ease of reading, valences are displayed on this site as percentages rather than values from 0 - 1.
